Dental Cleanings and Checkups

Many oral health problems, like cracks, cavities, and gum disease, start too small to notice and can grow into painful, costly problems if nothing is done. Regular checkups with Dr. David Magid, DMD, and cleanings with our hygienist, with air polishing included every time, help keep them small.

Dental Checkups & Cleanings

Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Because they find problems while they are still small and simple to treat. Waiting until something hurts lets decay and gum disease progress first. Regular checkups and cleanings allow Dr. Magid to monitor your oral health, treat problems at an early stage, and show you how to keep your mouth healthy between visits, which is the heart of our general and family dentistry.

Catching problems early helps you avoid unnecessary discomfort and the cost of emergency dental care. Many dental insurance plans cover a large share of checkups and cleanings. We are in-network with Delta Dental, accept other PPO plans out-of-network, and file the claim for you.

Patient Education

Why Regular Dental Visits Matter

Who Needs Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Everyone, including patients whose smiles feel healthy. Most adults and children should visit every six months, so small issues like cavities, tartar buildup, and early gum inflammation are caught before they become painful or costly. Even with daily brushing and flossing, a professional cleaning removes hardened plaque that home care can’t reach. We see children from about age 2.

Some patients may need more frequent visits, including those with a history of gum disease, diabetes, heart conditions, or a weakened immune system. Smokers, expecting mothers, and anyone with braces, implants, crowns, or bridges also benefit from closer monitoring. Bleeding gums, lingering bad breath, sensitivity, or loose teeth are reasons not to wait for your next checkup. Schedule a visit with Dr. Magid.

Benefits

Benefits of Regular Exams & Cleanings

A hygienist at work during a cleaning at Magid Dental Care

Cavities, cracks, and gum disease are often painless at the start. Seeing Dr. Magid on a regular schedule helps find them while a small filling or a deeper cleaning can treat them, before they grow into larger treatment needs.

Tartar hardens within days and cannot be brushed off. Your hygienist removes it from every surface, including under the gumline, and air polishing clears the biofilm and stains that are left.

Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it often starts as bleeding when you brush. Regular cleanings help keep bacteria along the gumline in check and give us the chance to treat early gum disease before bone is lost.

Removing plaque, tartar, and surface stains from coffee, tea, and wine leaves teeth smoother and brighter, and it takes away much of the bacteria behind bad breath.

Many insurance plans cover preventive visits at a high percentage, and treating problems later usually takes more time and money than preventing them. Without insurance, our discount membership plan includes two cleanings, two exams, and X-rays for a yearly fee.

Gum health has been linked in research to heart disease, diabetes control, and pregnancy outcomes, and a healthy, comfortable mouth makes eating, speaking, and smiling easier at every age.

Our Process

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

  1. Dr. Magid examining a patient's mouth

    Step 1

    A Thorough Oral Exam

For new patients, this is a visit of its own. It is a comprehensive exam with Dr. Magid of 45 to 60 minutes, with digital x-rays, scans, and an oral cancer screening, so he knows your mouth before anyone cleans it. Returning patients have their checkup with Dr. Magid at each cleaning visit, where he checks for decay, gum disease, and changes since last time.

  2. A hygienist removing tartar during a cleaning

    Step 2

    Plaque & Tartar Removal

Your hygienist gently removes plaque and hardened tartar from every tooth, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Tartar can’t be brushed away at home and leads to gum disease if it stays. We work at a comfortable pace and pause whenever you need.

  3. A smiling patient during air polishing

    Step 3

    Air Polishing & Flossing

Next, air polishing, included at no extra charge, clears surface stains from coffee, tea, and everyday foods with a fine jet of warm water, air, and gentle powder, leaving the enamel smooth. Professional flossing removes what is left, and a fluoride treatment follows when it will help you.

  4. A team member going over a plan with a patient on a tablet

    Step 4

    Your Personalized Plan

Before you leave, Dr. Magid reviews his findings and answers your questions. When treatment is needed, we explain your options clearly and without pressure. You also get home care tips written for your mouth, and we schedule your next checkup to keep you on track.

FAQ

Checkups & Cleanings FAQs

What to expect at your exam and cleaning, including appointment times, x-rays, and what preventive care costs.

Your first visit is a comprehensive exam with Dr. Magid of about 45 to 60 minutes. He examines your teeth, gums, bite, and existing dental work, takes the digital x-rays and scans he needs, screens for oral cancer, and explains his recommendations. Your cleaning is booked as its own visit.

In New Jersey, a routine cleaning with an exam and x-rays costs about $150 to $400 without insurance. That is a market estimate, not our fee, and your quote follows your exam. Our discount membership plan includes two cleanings, two exams, and x-rays for a yearly fee.

A new patient exam with Dr. Magid takes 45 to 60 minutes. It includes x-rays, scans, a full review of your teeth, gums, and bite, and time to talk through what he sees. A checkup at a later cleaning visit is shorter, since it builds on that first exam.

Plan on 30 to 60 minutes. A routine cleaning for a patient who comes regularly is at the shorter end, while heavy tartar or early gum disease can need more time or a deep cleaning over more than one visit. Air polishing is part of the visit, not an add-on.

It depends on your cavity and gum disease risk. Most adults with a healthy mouth need check-up x-rays every one to three years, and patients with a history of cavities or gum disease are checked more often. Our digital sensors use far less radiation than film.

Yes, if you are prone to cavities or have sensitive teeth, exposed roots, braces, or a dry mouth. A professional fluoride treatment after your cleaning strengthens enamel and slows decay. It is optional for healthy adults with no recent cavities. Our membership plan includes two fluoride treatments a year.
