Sedation Dentistry

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is medication that relaxes you during treatment, from a mild calm to deep drowsiness, with your mouth numbed as usual. It helps people who are anxious, gag easily, have trouble getting numb, or need a lot of work done in one visit. We offer three levels: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation.

Dr. Magid provides nitrous oxide and oral sedation. Dr. Jonathan Mendia, DMD, a dental anesthesiologist on the faculty of Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, comes to our office for IV sedation, so he monitors you while Dr. Magid does the dentistry.

Are You Asleep During Sedation?

No, not like general anesthesia, which we do not use. With nitrous oxide, you are relaxed and fully awake. With oral sedation, you are drowsy, may doze, and remember little, but can answer a question. With IV sedation, you are in a deep, dreamlike state, yet you breathe on your own, and your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen are monitored throughout.

The level that fits depends on your anxiety, the treatment, and your health history, which Dr. Magid reviews with you first. With oral or IV sedation, someone drives you home; with nitrous oxide, you can drive yourself.

Three Levels of Calm

Your Sedation Options

A patient resting with a warmed neck pillow and a ceiling TV at Magid Dental Care

A small nose mask and a sweet-smelling gas bring a warm, floating calm within minutes while you stay awake and talk. It clears quickly, so you drive yourself home, and it suits mild anxiety and a strong gag.

A prescribed pill leaves you deeply relaxed and drowsy, and many doze off and remember little. You can still answer and follow requests, and this option is best suited for moderate to severe anxiety and long visits. You’ll need someone to drive you home afterward.

The deepest option available, it can be ideal for severe fear, long surgical visits such as full-arch implants, or trouble getting numb. Dr. Mendia monitors you throughout while Dr. Magid works. Someone drives you home afterward.

Anyone whose fear has kept them from the dentist, people with a sensitive gag reflex or trouble getting numb, and anyone facing extractions, implants, or a root canal. Health history is reviewed first.

Every appointment, sedated or not, includes a ceiling TV with Netflix, a warmed, scented neck pillow, and a hand mask. Ask for a blanket, a break, or quiet at any point; nobody needs to feel awkward about it.

Each option is matched to your health history and medications first. Blood pressure, oxygen, and heart rate are monitored during oral and IV sedation, and nitrous oxide leaves no lingering effect.

Our Process

How Does a Sedation Visit Work?

  1. Dr. Magid listening to a nervous patient at a consultation

    Step 1

    Tell Us You Are Nervous

Say so when you call or at your exam; it is the most common thing we hear and the easiest to plan for. Dr. Magid reviews your health history and medications, explains the treatment, and recommends a level, with its cost on your estimate.

  2. Eleana handing a patient pre-visit instructions

    Step 2

    Before Your Visit

Nitrous oxide needs no preparation. For oral or IV sedation, you get written instructions on eating, drinking, and which medications to take, and you arrange a driver. For IV sedation, Dr. Mendia’s visit is scheduled to match yours.

  3. A sedated patient being monitored during treatment

    Step 3

    During Treatment

The sedation settles in, your mouth is numbed as usual, and the work begins. Your vital signs are monitored during oral and IV sedation, and with nitrous oxide you can ask for it to be turned up or down. Most patients say the visit felt far shorter than it was.

  4. A patient leaving Magid Dental Care with a family member after sedation

    Step 4

    Going Home

With nitrous oxide, you are back to normal within minutes and can drive. With oral or IV sedation, you rest in the office until ready, leave with your driver, and take the rest of the day off. Our team is here for any questions afterward.

FAQ

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

What sedation costs, which option is safest, IV sedation for seniors, who can provide it, laughing gas, and root canals.

It depends on the type: nitrous oxide costs the least, oral sedation more, and IV sedation the most because an anesthesiologist is present. We do not publish prices as they vary; the sedation fee is on your estimate before you decide. Some plans contribute to surgery, and CareCredit and Cherry apply.

Nitrous oxide is the mildest and wears off fastest, so it is the usual first choice, but all three options are safe when matched to your health history and monitored. Oral and IV sedation call for a medication review and a driver. A dental anesthesiologist provides IV sedation here.

Yes, for most healthy seniors. Dr. Mendia reviews your health history and medications, adjusts the dose based on your age and weight, and monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen. For many seniors, IV sedation turns several stressful visits into one easier appointment.

Only with additional training and a state permit, which is why many offices bring in a dental anesthesiologist, as we do. Dr. Magid provides nitrous oxide and oral sedation; for IV sedation, Dr. Mendia comes to our office, so each part has its own professional.

It takes the edge off without putting you to sleep. Through a small nose mask, it brings a warm, light calm within minutes; you stay awake and can talk, but worries fade, and the gag reflex dulls. It clears within minutes of removing the mask, so you can drive home.

Not usually, and you do not need to be: the tooth is fully numbed, and most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Nitrous oxide or oral sedation makes the visit calm, and IV sedation is available for severe anxiety. General anesthesia is not used here.
